Avoid Freezing As You Stand Over the Golf Ball
From time to time, you may notice a golfer stand perfectly still over the ball for what seems like an eternity. Suddenly, the club starts back in a fast, jerky motion. You want to avoid freezing over the ball as this causes tension and will tighten your muscles. You want to waggle the club a few times, tap your toes a little, or use a slight forward press by making a slight forward movement with your hands or your back knee. It will never hurt you to take a few deep breaths during your pre-shot routine either.
The idea of all of this is to keep moving a little to maintain the feeling of being tension free and tightening all of your muscles prior to the swing. You want to feel as loose as possible when you start the golf swing. Sam Snead used to describe this feeling as being “oily”. Tension in the golf swing is not a good thing, and you want to feel as free and relaxed as possible and swing the golf club.
